Bitty Bear Hat Pattern

Pin It

I finally decided to brave the cold and take a few outdoor pictures of Emma in her new bear hat.

Isn't she (and it) the cutest?!?!

Oh, and a big thank you goes out to my sweet friend Leigh and her awesome Christmas gift this year! I am so excited whenever I have the chance to wear my new, nifty gloves--perfect for cold weather picture-taking and grocery shopping with a little one!

I got it in my head to make a cute little teddy bear hat, and as I sat with my crochet hook and yarn, Emma's new accessory began to take shape. I used a brown shade of Lion Brand Homespun that's been lying around since, oh... I don't know... my college years? The right project just never turned up until now. The softness and "furry" texture it adds to the hat are absolutely perfect--just what I had pictured in my head!

I hope you'll enjoy this pattern as much as we already have. It's definitely a keeper!

Bitty Bear Hat Pattern

**Each round will be joined with a slip stitch into the first stitch of the round—NOT into the top of the beginning Ch 2.
**The beginning Ch 2 DOES count towards the final stitch count.

(Using brown yarn)
Begin with magic ring
Rnd 1: Ch 2 and 5 HDC in the ring; JOIN {6}
Rnd 2: Ch 2, HDC in joining stitch, 2HDC in each stitch around; JOIN {12}
Rnd 3: Ch 2, HDC in joining, *2HDC, HDC* repeat from * around; JOIN {18}
Rnd 4: Ch 2, HDC in joining, *2HDC, HDC, HDC* repeat from * around; JOIN {24}
Rnd 5: Ch 2, HDC in joining, *2HDC, HDC in next 3 stitches* repeat from * around; JOIN {30}
Rnd 6: Ch 2, HDC in joining, *2HDC, HDC in next 4 stitches* repeat from * around; JOIN {36}
Rnd 7: Ch 2, HDC in the next stitch and in each stitch around; JOIN {36}
Rnds 8-11: Repeat Rnd 7
Rnd 12: Ch 1, sc in the next stitch and in each stitch around; JOIN {36}
Fasten off and weave in ends

Ears {2}—K Hook
(Using cream yarn)
Begin with magic ring
Rnd 1: Ch 2 and 7 HDC in the ring; JOIN {8}
(Change to brown yarn)
Rnd 2: Ch 2, HDC in joining stitch, 2HDC in each stitch around; JOIN {16}
Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in the next stitch and in each stitch around; JOIN {16}
Fasten off, leaving a tail several inches long for sewing onto the hat.

Use pictures as a guide to place the ears evenly onto your hat. Sew on and fasten off.

Bow—I Hook
Chain 11
Row 1: Sc in the 2nd chain from the hook and in each chain across; ch 1 and turn {10}
Rows 2-3: Sc in each stitch across; ch 1 and turn {10}
Row 4: Sc in each stitch across; do not turn
Row 5: Sc around the entire edge of the rectangle and slip stitch into the top row of sc
Fasten off and weave in ends

(For the middle)
Cut a piece of yarn approximately 10 inches long. Cinching the center of the rectangle together, take your yarn and tie a double knot around the center to hold it together. Continue to wrap yarn around the center 10-12 times and, again, secure in the back with a double knot. Using the tail that remains, sew the bow securely into the top of the hat in front of one of the two ears. Fasten off.
