Big Bird for President?

It's 5 AM our time and I cannot sleep. There are too many things weighing heavily on my mind in regards to the future of our country. Actually, these things are literally screaming in my head to be heard. I've done a pretty good job until now of getting through the campaign ads, Facebook posts and annoying tweets by praying, counting to 10 and keeping my mouth shut. However, I just can't do that this morning.

So this is a political rant, and it's the one and only that I will likely ever share on my blog.

I'm a Christian, Conservative, Republican, Family Values, Anti-Abortion and Pro-Life, Middle-Class Member, Romney supporter.

Consider yourselves warned.

The first big Presidential debate aired Wednesday night, and as much as we try to steer clear of watching any of the political drama that's on t.v. these days, Scott insisted that we at least see a little. I fought him hard. Watching the debate would have no affect on my decision whatsoever. I know who I am voting for next month, and I'm pretty sure the rest of America knows who they're voting for, too. Still, my hubby convinced me that these debates play an important role in swaying those who are on the fence. Plus, I think he felt we were being pretty "un-American" if we didn't watch.

So, I gave in. We watched the first half hour and, I have to say, I was totally impressed.

One after the other, Romney was driving his points home to the American people. Tax cuts--BAM. Supporting the middle class, the backbone of America--BAM. Moving our economy back to a place where people are working and keeping what they earn--BAM. He just kept firing away while Obama, for once, was left the bumbling fool with nothing to defend himself but his failure of a four-year term. Yes, we thought. This is what our country needs to hear. THIS will surely be a winning night for Romney and move him one step closer to what we pray is God's place for him in the White House.

Oh, what fools we are.

I awoke the next morning to discover that, apparently but not surprisingly, the only thing our country heard is the possible disappearance of their beloved Big Bird.

Really? REALLY? REALLY?!

Have Americans become so clouted by narrow-mindedness that they would really base their votes on whether or not a fictional puppet character is on t.v.? Ooooooooh, let me tell you...

... this awakens a rage deep within me.

I am a mother, and it's true that my daughter likes Sesame Street. In fact, we're even taking her to see Sesame Street Live on Saturday (thanks for the tickets, Mom!). It's not that I don't get how many little ones' hearts might be broken for a while. Because I do. But do you know what I care about even more? My children's futures. The ability to pay for their food, clothes, school supplies and eventual college education without being out on the streets because of it. I care about not leaving them behind in a heap of debt that our generation has created. I care about taking the $600+ that we shell out in car tax every year and putting it towards things that will benefit them!

The opposite side continues to trust Obama and his failing plans to "bring change" to our country. Well, I choose to trust the man God has raised up at this moment, Mitt Romney. And if the man says that cutting funding to PBS is going to help then, by all means Romney, let's part ways with the big yellow bird. We do live in an age of DVD's and Netflix, after all. And as much crying as so much of our country does, I've seen even the poorest of poor out there with food stamps in one hand and an iPad in the other. These shows our children love will not be lost forever. They'll still be around... trust me, they will.

I had some other things that I wanted to say in an effort to vent my anger, but fortunately, God has answered my prayers and taken the unnecessary out of my mouth and mind. I love how He protects me like that.

I'm not sure that anything will be gained by my posting this... in fact, I'm certain nothing will. That's not why I chose to write my thoughts down. I wrote to simply be heard. Even if no one reads this, I can go back to sleep knowing that I didn't spend this entire election sitting idly by with my mouth clenched shut. Trust me--it's been a hard thing to do. The whole mess with Chick-Fil-A would have put me in a straight jacket if I didn't have a mighty God to call on, who calmed my frustrated thoughts in time. And I know he'll do the same for me now. While the rest of the world fights over Elmo and chicken nuggets, I'll be resting in the peace that only comes from knowing my Lord and Savior.

Thank you, God, for that.

One thing I would ask before ending this little spiel is to keep your nasty, argumentative and opposing comments to yourselves. It's not that I can't take the heat because I can... oh, believe you me, I can. That's what I've been doing for soooooooooo LONG now. You all on the opposing team take every.single.opportunity to raise your voices loud and clear. The Christian, Conservative, Republican, Family Values, Anti-Abortion, Pro-Life, Middle Class, Romney Supporters know you all hate us.

We hear your impossible tweets and Facebook statuses loud and clear.

This right here? This is my turn. My turn to say, You know what? I don't care for your beliefs either. I hesitate to say "the feeling's mutual" because I don't hate you. but I definitely dislike everything that you stand for.

So, once again, consider yourselves politely warned that any attempts at starting an argument or debate will be time wasted on your part because those comments will quickly be deleted. This is my blog, and it's MY outlet for expressing how I feel.

Freedom of speech extends to us, too, you know.

  1. Wow all I can say is that I am very proud of you Kim. You just wrote what ALOT of us are feeling but are afraid to speak up about. Thank you for posting. Hopefully our country will be going down a different path sooner rather than later.
Now get some sleep:) Love You!

  3. Hi Kim, Robyn Niss here. I've been reading your blog for a few weeks now and felt compelled to comment today. I'm actually much more left leaning. That being said, I was actually incredibly impressed by how fair and honest the reporting I saw was and how clearly they called the debate a win for Romney. I heard about the big bird thing, but I found a refreshing lack of talk about stupid one-line gaffes (like the 47% thing, or you didn't build that) and a lot of good substance about the points that were made. So my impression, at least from the news sites I visit was that very few folks mentioned the stupid things all politicians sometimes say. Because as you mentioned, and I agree whole-heartedly, that's NOT what's important. One-liners doesn't lead this country, the vision of the president does. So I guess I just wanted to say that as a left-leaning-but-still-undecided voter, I agree with your rant wholeheartedly, but hope that the people of this country are smart enough to look at what's important! You're right about that!!

All that being said - PBS said no worries about Big Bird so Emma's safe :)

  4. Yes, I had to smile the next day about all the comments about taking Big Bird off the air. Come on now, just trying to find something that they did not like what he said and running with it. Then of course, the next best statement was Gore saying it was the president only just got there and the altitude was effecting him. Oh boy how sad! Praying that the people will realize that what we have now is not improving anyone's lives. Everyone should be asking themselves - Are you better off today then you were 4 years ago? If not, then make a change. I will be happy when it is all over and we do not need to hear about it and all the drama surrounding it.
